Important And Helpful Moving Supplies You Might Not Have Thought To Get

Posted on: 24 July 2015

When you're packing up your house to leave, it's easy to get into a mode wherein you focus entirely on getting the number of boxes, packing tape and markers you need, without really considering some of the other moving supplies that might be helpful your relocation. The following moving supplies are items you're going to want to buy in addition to the standard materials.

Plastic Stretch Wrap

Plastic stretch wrap has a ton of different uses. In fact, it may be one of the most versatile moving supplies you can buy. Plastic stretch wrap comes to you on a cardboard roller with a plastic handle. You can think of this packing material as being like a giant roll of plastic wrap for the kitchen.

To use it, place a little piece of plastic stretch wrap on the edge of the item being packed and hold that piece of plastic wrap in place. Roll the wrap around the item until it makes a full circuit around the object. Once it's wrapped itself around the object at least one time, the plastic stretch wrap will naturally grip the item and you can let go of the beginning of the piece. Pull the plastic stretch wrap around the item tightly and make several complete circuits. True to its name, the plastic stretch wrap will stretch around the item, forming a tight, protective barrier.

Plastic stretch wrap can be used to protect items from breaking, may be used to wrap bubble wrap around a very fragile item, or may be used to wrap up a large and irregularly sized piece of furniture, like a couch. Plastic stretch wrap comes in different sizes for different purposes.

Mattress Cover

During your move, you may be faced with one of three choices:

  • Wrap up your mattress in blankets and tape the blankets to the mattress.
  • Drag the mattress to your new house without any protection at all.
  • Wrap the mattress up in a mattress cover.

It's easy to forget about this detail until the last minute, at which point it may be too late to buy a mattress cover. Wrapping the mattress in blankets might work, but the blankets are likely to fall off during transit. Of course, leaving the mattress unprotected could lead to the ruin of the mattress. For maximum protection, purchase a mattress cover before the day of your move.

Picture Boxes

Large, flat boxes shaped to fit big pictures are a specialty item that are generally sold at moving supply stores and through moving and storage companies. It's easy to forget about buying boxes to fit the pictures on your wall until the day of the move, at which point it's probably too late. If you want to protect your pictures during the move, plan to purchase the boxes ahead of time.
